Spring Cleaning Checklist

During this time of Social Distancing, it is the perfect time for Spring Cleaning.

When appliances are fresh and clean, they tend to run more efficiently, saving you money on utility bills. Keeping your appliances clean and properly maintained will also likely add years to your appliance’s life and preclude the need for replacing them for a long time.

Here are some great tips to make the most of your Spring Cleaning Ritual and be sure to give your appliances some TLC…

1. Garbage Disposal

Solve the Stink. Peel some citrus fruit (lemon, orange, grapefruit or lime – whatever you have in your fridge), turn on the faucet and disposal. Toss the peel into the disposal and enjoy the fresh smell.

2. Dishwasher

Clean the dishwasher trap and filter, and remove any debris you find. Use a dishwasher cleaning product. Run an empty cycle with dishwasher cleaner to remove mineral and soap scum build up.

3. Stove & Oven

If your oven has a self-cleaning cycle on it, activate it on a warm spring day with the windows open. To get that baked-on gunk off your removable metal stovetop burners run them through the dishwasher. Or, you can soak them in hot soapy water. If you have a stainless steel stove top, wipe the surface using a sponge or a cloth dipped in warm soapy water and wrung out well. If you have a glass cooktop, use a glass cooktop cleaner to get it looking its best.

4. Refrigerator

Throw out anything that might be old or moldy, Including condiments. Wipe down the interior walls, shelves and rubber gaskets. Have the condenser coil cleaned by a professional before it gets hot out. Doing so will reduce run times, save energy and keep temperatures inside the unit where they should be.

5. Microwave

Clean your microwave in no time. Fill a heatproof container with a cup or two of water mixed with one tablespoon of white vinegar. Microwave the mixture until half of the liquid has evaporated. Let sit 10 minutes. Remove bowl and wipe down the interior surface until it looks like new.

6. Washer & Dryer

The efficiency of the duct that leads from the back of your dryer to the outside of the should should be measured by a qualified technician at least once a year. Look behind your dryer and remove any clothing from around the machine. Items can block breathing vents and starve your machine of air.

To clean your washer, wash the detergent and fabric softener dispensers with soapy water. For front load washers, running the cleaning cycle (if you have that option) with a washing machine cleaner. This will help keep your washer to smell fresh and clean.
